A Man’s History – Pietro Ubaldi

In A Man’s History, Pietro Ubaldi unveils the journey of a man committed to a higher Ideal, navigating the often brutal struggles of ordinary human life. From early on, he recognized the artificial nature of human culture and the conventional falsehoods of society—a world built on a philosophy at odds with the Gospel, which he carried deep in his heart and felt compelled to live by. This inner conflict raised a powerful question: who was right—the Gospel, with its call to a moral and spiritual life, or the world with its materialistic, instinct-driven psychology? Yet, this very world was the proving ground where destiny had placed him, where he was to live, understand, and love others as they were, not as he wished them to be.

Without betraying his ideal, he came to understand that he was called to live alongside ordinary people, to endure and share in their struggles, for that was his path. He realized he must love his neighbour, no matter their faults, as the Gospel and the command of Christ demanded. His new duty was to descend into the human condition, just as Christ had done, embracing humanity in its imperfections. Thus, he undertook the experience—and he did so wholeheartedly. What mattered the pain, the disappointments, the poverty, the betrayals, and the aggression if he had been born to love his neighbour? Through this love, he would also help others take their first steps toward moral and spiritual ascension.

Living out the Gospel in this way, he came to understand that ordinary people, with their primal instincts and sensory needs, were simply living out their natural biological phase; one could not demand more from them. His role, instead, was to understand and love them, helping them rise towards God.

The book closes with a moving vision of Christ, as if to reward this man who had suffered much and loved even more. In this final scene, set in the intimacy of a humble room, a brief, profound dialogue unfolds between this solitary, suffering man and Christ, who visits him alongside Sister Death. He welcomes her with joy, knowing his spirit will be freed, for he has not lived in vain.
